English commentators will curse the day this guy arrives in England – Yehven Konoplyanka is a bit of mouthful. But he’s also an incredibly talented player.
A major international tournament always shines some light on some talented, but unheard of players, and Konoplyanka could emerge from the European Championships as one of the hotter properties on the market. Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk will certainly hope so. 22 years-old, and already with 16 caps and 5 goals for his country, he’s a forward who’s gifted with the ball at his feet. England may very well find that out to their peril on the 19th June in Donetsk.
Most of you will remember the Ukraine from the last World Cup as being a dour, unambitious side – not so much this time round. Andriy Shevchenko is still there, but he’s surrounded by players like Andriy Yarmalenko and Oleg Husiev, who promise a lot of pace and trickery out wide.
If the Ukrainians perform, then it could very well make a star of someone like Konoplyanka – and he’d be a really good fit for a Liverpool-type side, a club who are looking for some creativity. The need for an attacking-midfielder is highlighted and circled on Kenny Dalglish’s shopping list this Summer, and he would do well to tune in to the Ukraine’s games during the Championships.
