Remember when Yaya Toure’s agent said this:
“If he signs a contract in the next three or four days, OK. If not, we will not wait any longer and will start negotiations with different clubs.
Today is Tuesday, so it means by Saturday. We will say ‘Thank you. OK, Yaya will leave in May.
I do not feel he will stay at City. This is not about money. He wants to leave because of many reasons.
He is one of the best players at Manchester City but does not feel the respect of the staff. Only Roberto Mancini respects Yaya.”
Today, it was announced that Toure had signed a new four-year contract.
What I want to know, is how a new contract remedies all those other grievances he supposedly had with Manchester City?
If this posturing was never ‘about the money’, then how does a new deal – when his existing contract still had time to run on it – create a better personal situation for the player?
Look, Yaya Toure and his agent aren’t the first player/representative team to concoct some media friendly rhetoric for the sake of creating leverage in a negotiation, and they won’t be the last – but that doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to moan about it.
It was always about the money, don’t insult everybody’s intelligence.
