Why winning the League Cup may not be good for Liverpool

If Liverpool win at Wembley this afternoon, you’re going to hear words like renaissance, stepping-stone, validation, and progression used in the aftermath.
Wrong.
Liverpool today would be against the long-term interests of the club; it would serve only to mitigate the myriad failings that exist on Merseyside at the moment. Struggling to make any impression on the league, unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next season – winning a trophy that struggles for credibility shouldn’t disguise those greater concerns.
Winning a trophy is always nice, of course, but don’t let it become more than it really is. Of the current top 7, only Newcastle and Manchester City showed any interest in competing for the Carling Cup. Credit where it’s due to Liverpool, because they knocked over Manchester City when they were asked, but success at Wembley only really represents a pleasant diversion from an otherwise poor season.
Regardless of the result this afternoon, serious questions have to be asked of Kenny Dalglish in the Summer; his transfer policy, his tactics, his handling of the Luis Suarez drama – even the most partisan supporter would struggle to accept the current incarnation of Liverpool as being fitting of the club’s reputation.
While it’s not fair to say that winning this trophy is in any way a poisoned chalice, the competition does have previous for derailing seasons – just ask last year’s Birmingham City, 2009 winners Manchester United, or Tottenham in 2008, all of whom saw their seasons flatline after picking-up early silverware.
Ultimately English football needs a strong Liverpool, and it’s unquestionably a good thing to see them adding to their list of honours again – which, with all due respect to Cardiff, they will probably do today. But just don’t use this a context with which to judge the rest of the season, because it’s more of an enjoyable sideshow than a true indication of this club’s direction under Kenny Dalglish.

You are Soooo right! We should make sure that we NEVER win anything again because to do so would absolutely ruin the club. We would become laughing stocks in world football. People the world over would be saying, ” Look there go Liverpool winning something again. Nothing good will come of it you know” and laugh and laugh. We should also make sure we don’t win any matches and get down out of the league divisions and into the Sunday league or something.
