This is an absolute priority for Manchester City, because they’re really not the same without their captain.
The Sun reports this morning that a new five-year contract worth £130,000/week has been verbally agreed with Vincent Kompany, and that he’ll be signing it on the club’s return from their Asian tour.
City fans won’t need telling, but Kompany is the rock on which everything is built – yes, you could obviously make an argument for Yaya Toure’s importance – but without the Belgian, there’s something less intimidating about facing Roberto Mancini’s side. He’s the best defender in the Premier League at the moment, regardless of Nemanja Vidic’s fitness.
On another note, Kompany’s well-worth following on Twitter if you get the chance. He’s extremely articulate, even in a second language, and he frequently makes pertinent points about the state of the game. There are very few players on there who don’t just use it for self-promotion, but Kompany’s one of them. Interesting guy.
