Thoughts on Asamoah Gyan and Sunderland – May 1st 2012
What’s actually happened here?
The Sun reported this morning that Al Ain, where Asamoah Gyan has been on-loan since September, are increasingly confident of keeping the Ghanaian forward. Here’s their CEO Carlo Nohra:
“I’m very confident that he will be staying.
He has indicated on a number of occasions that he would like to remain at the club.
There is a loan agreement that we need to work out with Sunderland, but what is really important is that the player wants to be here and we would like to keep him.
So now it’s about working out the logistics of a transfer.
That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but the seeds are there for us to ensure that this becomes a long-term deal.”
This whole incident essentially got lost in the reshuffle of Steve Bruce leaving Sunderland, but it remains one of the more bizarre transfer situations – what happened between Gyan and the club to make this seem like such a good idea.
And why, of all places, would you go all the way to the UAE to avoid playing for Sunderland? There’s an obvious answer, which is money, but there must be more to it than that, because there’s plenty of money left in European football too.
Gyan is 26 years-old and he’s already retired to a petrodollar league. Crazy.
