Cast your minds back six weeks, and remember when betting was suspended on Stephane Sessegnon joining Tottenham and the papers were full of rumours of him potentially moving to other top-6 sides. It was completely believable, Sessegnon was excellent in the second-half of 2011/12. Whether or not any official approach was ever made is irrelevant, Martin O’Neil has done well to keep him at Sunderland.
The Benin – and not French – international has that rare and effective combination of diminutive size but explosive power; a direct player who is incredibly difficult to shake off the ball.
Occasionally he’s prone to trying to beat one man too many, but for the large part he’s central to everything Sunderland do well in the attacking-third. A technically-gifted player with a complete range of passing and the ability to get himself on the score sheet, he’s a must for Fantasy Football managers this season – and had you included him circa-December/January of last season, then you won’t need convincing.
The one area of concern – for him, and Sunderland in general – is the lack of attacking talent ahead of him. Steven Fletcher looks likely to come through the door within the next week, but it’s hard to truly excited about a forward who only averages a goal every three games – but if rumours are to be believed, then Manchester City’s exciting young Swede John Guidetti could also be on his way. For those who haven’t seen him play, have a quick YouTube of his spell in the Eredivisie last season – the sky’s the limit for him.
Guidetti and Sessegnon in the same team would be worth watching.
