Anybody who played Football Manager circa 2005, would have expected Raul Garcia to have achieved world-beating status by now and to be firmly-embedded in the Spanish national side.
Not so much, Garcia has never developed into the kin of player he should’ve been.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder spent last season on-loan back at his club of origin Osasuna, and now it looks as if Los Colchoneros won’t be too resistant to letting him go. The Daily Mail – yes, we know – are linking him this morning with a move Liverpool.
Everybody’s least favourite pseudo-broadsheet claims that Athletic Bilbao are interested, which seems a little far-fetched given the riches in their midfield. In fact, even regarding the Liverpool connection, the sum of this article seems to be the quotation that the Merseyside club ‘have been linked with Garcia’.
It’s not particularly compelling.
This is the kind of player who Brendan Rodgers should be targeting; creative, crafty – but Garcia has stagnated, and it would seem like a bit of punt alongside the more sensible pursuit of Gylfi Sigurdsson.
He’ll never be the player he was projected to be, so he’s best left in Spain to be honest.
