Twitter is a funny old place – sure, the majority of the interaction between users is on a genuine, if frequently offensive, basis and it serves the same function as any other social media platform.
But it also affords the opportunity for the more attention-starved members of our community to pretend to be someone they’re not. It’ll never cease to amaze me how much effort some people will put in to convincing others that they’re someone that they’re not. Twitter has given that type of person the kind of forum that previously they could only have dreamed of.
The phrase ‘in the know’ gets banded about too liberally now, and within the context of Twitter it should always be treated as an ignorance klaxon. Anyone with the abbreviation ITK stamped on their profile needs to be avoided at all costs: “I know this, I know that” – yeah, you know fuck all. Hiding behind those three letters is a pre-pubescent child who spends his days being ignored at school.
‘Sources’ are Sky Sports News, ‘insiders’ are the morning papers, and exclusive information is nearly always false. Beware, beware…
In recent months, there’s been a steady influx of false-agents to Twitter, all of claim to be working right at the heart of every European transfer deal currently in-progress. ‘Deal done’, ‘you heard it here first’, ‘right again’. Same old, same old – and to add another dimension, all of them seem to be constantly at war with each other over which of them is more ‘in the know’ – it’s like arguing innocence in a prison yard.
