Pep Guardiola’s resignation has led to the usual sycophant-athon in the papers, and Oliver Holt has led the way:
‘He (Guardiola) has won the Champions League twice and La Liga three times in succession. And he has proved that you do not have to play essentially defensive football, like Jose Mourinho, to reach the pinnacle.’
Honestly, do some of our writers actually watch the teams that they pass comment on? Goals scored by ‘defensive, negative’ Real Madrid this season – 211, goals scored by Barcelona – 201.
Statistics aside, if you watched either side in La Liga, you’d be very hard-pressed to say that one is more attacking than the other – they’re equally offensive, just with different approaches.
But yes Olly, Madrid and Mourinho are killing football with their negativity and defensive tactics – whatever fits in with your agenda.
