Harry Redknapp expects Luka Modric and Gareth Bale to stay at Tottenham

Sigh. This again.

Here’s Harry Redknapp’s response to being asked whether he asked either Gareth Bale or Luka Modric to leave Tottenham in the Summer:

“No. When they came to the club Tottenham were nowhere near the Champions League. They’re at a great club, there’s no reason why they would suddenly want to leave. There’s not too many clubs they could go to that are better than Tottenham.

“I don’t make the decisions, the chairman runs things in terms of finances. But we’re not a selling club.”

And what are you basing that on Harry? Because it’s apparent to everyone else that Luka Modric has phoned-in the second half of the season, and that Gareth Bale is more interested in playing for his own highlight reel than for the team.

If Spurs don’t make the Champions League, there’s no way that Modric doesn’t use that as an excuse to agitate for a transfer. Was Redknapp not paying attention during all that Chelsea nonsense in 2011 – the Croatian wants to go and fill his wallet somewhere, and he’ll have another bloody good go at it once the season finishes.

Bale? Less certain. But you get the feeling that one relates to the other, in that if Modric leaves, Bale will see that as a statement of Spurs’ lack of ambition and follow suit. Either way, Redknapp can’t just make sweeping statements in the press like this and hope that they come true – he’d be better off spending his time extricating his side from one of the biggest mid-season sulks that the Premier League has ever seen.

Do you like the way he covers his tracks at the end of that quote?

“I think they’ll stay, but if they don’t it’s the Chairman’s fault.”
