Ok, I want to be sensitive to those who are waiting for Match Of The Day to see this for the first time – and it is worth the wait by the way – so this is just a focus on a tiny detail from Matthew Lowton’s goal at Stoke today.
It may seem trivial, but look how much pressure Lowton is under when he hits this. To have two players in his face whilst trying to strike a ball on the volley…that ratchets up the difficulty considerably. Even more so at Premier League level, and with the defenders in question being of the lumbering Stoke variety.
Think about it: how many times have we all shaped to shoot, only to have defenders bear down and disrupt our concentration. What usually happens? The ball flies off the pitch at a right angle. Not this time though, and the control, balance, and concentration Lowton shows here are all remarkable.
