EPL News 24/7A couple of sources have began to report that Martin O’Neil is interested in Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe – the Sunderland Echo being the latest of them this morning.
The local paper claim that the 29 year-old is an ‘option’ in light of the failure to make significant progress with Steven Fletcher and Wolves.
In theory, Defoe would be an excellent signing for O’Neil, but it’s just not realistic. Because of their failure to conclude a deal for Emmanuel Adebayor, Defoe is Spurs’ only senior forward other than the inexperienced Harry Kane – and as such, there’s just no way that he would be allowed to leave White Hart Lane at the moment.
In any other circumstance, this would be a good deal for everyone involved, but it’s a non-starter for the time being.
Regarding Fletcher, the club can’t be allowed to be held to ransom by Wolves over the price – the Scot is by no means a £15m forward, and so that this transfer appears off should be considered a good thing. Focus on bringing John Guidetti in, and forget the other options.
