So it’s almost official; Didier Drogba has played his last game for Chelsea, and will be heading to Asia to join Nicolas Anelka in Shanghai next season.
157 goals in 338 appearances only tells a fraction of his story in England – from the admittedly profligate early days, to the colossal ‘complete forward’ displays against Barcelona and the late-leveller against Bayern on Saturday. An enormous contribution to Abramovich-era Chelsea.
Fans of other clubs will deride him for his playacting and simulation, and yes, there were occasions when he resembled a badly-trained stuntman, but what nobody can deny is that whenever Drogba was on the pitch, Chelsea were always capable of finding a goal and always carried some menace and some physicality.
Philipe Senderos, and a whole host of other centre-halves, will be delighted to see the back of him.
