What do you do when everyone becomes disinterested in two long-running transfer stories?
You mash them into one big, super-transfer story, of course.
That’s what The Metro have done this morning, insisting that Thibaut Courtois could be used as a makeweight in a deal which would bring Radamel Falcao to Chelsea.
All of you will by now be aware of Courtois antipathy regarding his return to Chelsea, and his desire not to play second-fiddle to Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge – understandably so, because the Belgian is too good to be sitting on the substitutes bench.
Additionally, Chelea are unlikely to sacrifice their goalkeeping future – because that is truly what Courtois represents – for Falcao, regardless of how many goals the Colombian scores.
The sale of Falcao represents an opportunity for Atletico to solve their financial problems, and so they’re unlikely to accept a knocked-down ‘player plus cash’ deal for the biggest asset. Remember also, that 20% of the striker’s rights are actually owned by his agent, Jorge Mendes, so the Spanish club are already set to lose part of any cash revenue.
Mendes wants money, Atletico want money – and Chelsea are highly-unlikely to even entertain an approach for Courtois.
