‘Polarising’ is probably a fitting description of Eric Cantona…but then, so is ‘brilliant’.

Completely unique as a player, and probably the most impactful of Sir Alex Ferguson’s signings, which at just over £1m is probably a moment that will haunt Howard Wilkinson and Leeds United forever. The development of academy products David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt was obviously a stars-aligning moment at Old Trafford, but having a pro of Cantona’s stature in the team went a long way to harnessing those talents and giving that young team some gravitas.

Collar up, studs sometimes up, but hands down the most watchable Premier League player of the 1990s.

Leo Messi’s 234 goals for Barcelona

This, as you might expect, is pretty fantastic. Last night, as we all know, Leo Messi equalled and surpassed Cesar Rodriguez’s goalscoring record for Barcelona – and here are all 234 goals.

To be fair, Messi’s the only player on the planet who could hold his own goal of the month contest – his hat-trick against Granada last night would be fit to grace most top-threes – so this isn’t the worst 14 minutes of football you’ll ever see.

Yes, it’s been a little bit of an oversight not to have published this sooner, but better late than never…

So, from 1996 to 2006, here are Alan Shearer’s 206 goals for Newcastle.

A proper, old fashioned centre-forward, with a proper old-fashioned goal celebration. If he was as quarter as good as a pundit, the Match of the Day sofa would be a far more insightful place these days…

Georgi Kinkladze – Best Manchester City moments

Actually, in our post-Leo Messi/Cristiano Ronaldo world, this all looks quite dated. But still, it’s Georgi Kinkladze, and he was one of the most watchable players in England in the mid-to-late 1990s.

If you’re young enough not have seen him play first time round, imagine a British footballing landscape still filled with cloggers, bad wedge haircuts, and a drinking culture. The little Georgian was a rarity, and made even more precious by the substandard team around him.

Magical, magical player…later to be found crashing cars at Ajax and getting fat at Derby.

If ever a forward looked like he was built specifically to play in the Premier League, it’s Didier Drogba.

Because he’s been around for so long, and because he’s been part of such a successful generation of Chelsea players, you forget how many goals he’s scored – and the range of finishes he’s capable of.

Come on now, you’ve got twenty minutes before you need to do any work…

A bit random, but because their season ultimately finished without silverware or repeated qualification for the Champions League, it’s easy to forget some of the quality moments that Harry Redknapp’s team produced last year.

So, in chronological order, here are all Spurs’ goals from 2010/11…you’ll have forgotten how good Gareth Bale’s volley up at Stoke was by now.

…and if you want an extended version of the Champions League campaign, then have a bang on this…

A Champions League Final featuring two English teams to be decided by penalties?

Yes, please – you’ve got to love the drama if you’re a neutral.

There’s really something for everybody here – Cristiano Ronaldo looking like he’s about to cry after being denied by Petr Cech, John Terry stumbling over his lines with the trophy there for the taking, Owen Hargreaves scoring probably the best penalty an Englishman has ever taken…

One night in Russia.

Sunderland’s Asamoah Gyan – Loan Goals

William Hill are offering a free £25 bet to all new members – go on, make work more interesting.

In retrospect, one of the strangest moments of the season was Asamoah Gyan’s loan move to Al Ain. At the time, it seemed like an awfully long way to go to avoid having to play for Steve Bruce – and it still does, because you have to believe that there would have been European clubs willing to give the Ghanaian a temporary home.

It gets stranger too, because there are whispers about a permanent deal approaching with an unnamed Qatari club.

What?

I think that is what’s known as sacrificing your career to the Gods of oil money.

Anyway, here are Gyan’s top goals and moments from his loan spell…
