Arsenal should be taking a closer look at Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud has been a trending name in gossip columns for a good six months, and with good reason, the 25 year-old has just helped to fire Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title with 22 goals in 36 appearances.

Giroud’s been mentioned a couple of times in connection with Arsenal, and it would be hugely disappointing if Arsene Wenger didn’t at least flesh out the possibility of bringing the Frenchman to the Emirates.

Doubts obviously exist over whether Robin Van Persie will be at the club next year, but regardless of how that situation is resolved, Arsenal desperately need an out-and-out forward to lead their line – that should Giroud.

If Van Persie stays at the club, then Wenger could tuck the Dutchman in behind a focal point like Giroud, and blend artistry with a more ‘rough and tumble’ approach. It would be perfect; the finesse, creativity, and goal-threat of Van Persie, combined with the violence of Giroud.

Marouane Chamakh has never been good enough, the manager’s relationship with Nicklas Bendtner appears – at best – strained, and as brilliant as Van Persie has been this year he’s not naturally an advanced forward. Arsenal need the kind of outlet that Giroud provides; the menacing, alpha male-style striker capable of bullying centre-halves and providing a credible second approach when the side’s intricate passing isn’t effective.

He’ll cost a fair amount, but he’d go a long way to shedding this team of their ‘soft’ image – which surely Wenger has to try and address this Summer. Yann M’Vila is a great signing, and he’ll be a real asset, Lukas Podolski is a nice option to have, and Giroud would tick a box that’s been empty for too long – those three in combination would represent a real upgrade to this side.
