It’s not a surprise that Vincent Kompany is both highly-intelligent and an extremely talented defender, the two aren’t exactly mutually exclusive.
By now everyone has heard that the Belgian has had his red card quashed by The FA’s disciplinary committee, and he will not have to serve any ban for his dismissal on Sunday – quite right too, Mike Dean’s decision was little more than an attempted peace offering to the Arsenal fans.
On Sunday evening, presumably as the Manchester City squad traveled back north, Kompany conducted a very eloquent and dignified defence of himself on Twitter – and it was extremely impressive. He posted images of the tackle from different angles, he explained his view on the incident, and he was also very respectful to the official who sent him off. It was all extremely impressive, and very much the behaviour of a club captain and a role model.
There’s no particular agenda behind bringing this up, other than to compare it with the emotional incontinence shown by so many other players on social media. Ashley Cole in response to The FA? Joey Barton last night? Those are extreme examples, but interesting comparisons nonetheless. Kompany has a maturity about him which is regrettably very scarce in the game.
This isn’t an isolated incident either, he’s very good insightful on Twitter and speaks intelligently on a range of subjects – well worth a follow if you’re not already doing so.

Plitheiron – don’t be daft mate. This article is about Kompany and you’ve tried to angle it to your own warped mind. Wilshire is a crackin young player. Give him a break. In case you hadn’t been following the news, one of our own – Michael Johnson – has had his career cut short cos he struggled to deal with his demons. We always pick on the troubled ones in this country.
Well done to the FA! Never a red card in a million years! Wiltshire made a meal of it by diving in at Kompany. One could even say it was a deliberate act to get the player sent off? Been watching the lad since his return from injury and have not been impressed! Has been dirty and petulant on a number of occasions(red card at old Trafford). A real waste of talent!
