EPL News 24/7There’s been a huge flow of betting money towards Michael Owen signing for Everton over the last 24 hours, and as a result he’s now priced at 1/4 to move to Goodison Park on a free.
Michael Owen? Even on a free transfer, this wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.
His injury problems are obviously well-documented, but equally, his lack of first-team football and the subsequent absence of sharpness from his game is just as much of an issue. It’s hard to see any club, including Everton, offering Owen more than a single-year deal, and as such how much time is he really going to have to build his fitness to an acceptable level – considering that Nikica Jelavic would be the default starter in that side.
And all that time, Everton would be bearing the cost of his wages. There aren’t a whole lot of positives here.
There will always be people willing to perpetuate the myth of Owen’s ‘natural goalscorer’ tag, but there’s no such thing – he doesn’t guarantee goals anymore, and he offers nothing in link play.
He doesn’t actually improve Everton, nor, because of his perennial lack of fitness, does he actually provide them with any depth at forward. Can’t see it happening, he’s just not a Premier League player anymore.
