Modern times being what they are, Yoann Gouffran naturally confirmed that he’ll be joining Newcastle United via Twitter.

Hopefully you all remember enough of your French GCSEs to translate for yourselves…

There’s some video below of what Newcastle have bought – apologies for the sound, it might be worth muting.

Gouffran is not prolific, and there are still some very rough edges to his game – but he’s a decent finisher, and he has genuine defence-stretching pace which will be extremely useful for Newcastle. Although capable of playing wide, in the sort of role Papiss Cisse struggled in prior to Demba Ba’s departure, he’s much more effective centrally.

This is a good signing, but it will be interesting to see how Alan Pardew accommodates him. At a guess, and assuming that Pardew doesn’t change his system, Gouffran probably will start out-wide and defer to Cisse – still, that’s conjecture for another day, the important thing is that the deal has clearly been done.

Newcastle fans have been owed these signings for a while.
