Yesterday Andre Villas-Boas poured cold water on the notion that Tottenham would be strengthening their squad with a forward this month – last night though, Sami Mokbel from The Mail had the club in advanced negotiations to sign Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla.
Mokbel has copied this story from the Spanish press, with Mochodeporte breaking the news yesterday lunchtime that Sevilla’s President had ‘flown to London for negotiations.’ Instead of accrediting the source properly though, it’s been dressed-up with a ‘Sportsmail understands…’ prefix. That’s proper journalism.
While we might all be used to the endless rumour-mongering – or rumour copying and pasting – with Tottenham, there is some logic here: Sevilla have financial issues, and are really in no place to reject sensible offers for their players, of which Negredo is the most desirable. Put £15m-£20m on the table for the forward, and the club will have to listen.
For the record, Sevilla have already denied that Jose Maria del Nido traveled to England on any transfer business, so take that for what it’s worth.
Interestingly though, The Independent did a precis of The Mail article and, again, passed it off as their own work – so ‘third-hand’ then…
