Goal.com have done what just about every site is doing at the moment when they run out of ideas: they reprint a Radamel Falcao story and tweak the details.
Apparently ‘Goal.com has learned’ – ‘learned’, really – that Chelsea will make a ‘sensational £48m bid’ for the Colombian in January, and they actually have the temerity to claim an exclusive for it. Hands up if you haven’t already read this in half-a-dozen different places already.
The logic here is fine, because Chelsea would be terrifyingly potent if they added Falcao – he’s twice the player Fernando Torres’ is, and the combination with the Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar would be, in theory, devastating. There’s no question that Roman Abramovich would be prepared to pay such a sizeable fee, of course he will – but Chelsea are not going to get a free run at the forward, he’s too in demand.
Additionally, it doesn’t seem likely that the player would move in January. Players like this are almost the sole preserve of the Summer window, when full transfer budgets are available. Plus, Atletico have a real chance of Champions League qualification this season – they sit, unbeaten, second in La Liga at the moment – and as such they’re not going to cash-in on Falcao before May, or at least if they do, it would be to their own detriment.
Chelsea would be in the mix for him, of course they will, but this is going to be full-scale ruck between the richest clubs in Europe – so it’s by no means a certainty. He’s worth it though, he’s a phenomenal player – if you can dig out the 90th minute free-kick winner he scored against Sociedad on Sunday, then it’s definitely worth your time.
