Most of you will have seen another ‘Gareth Bale is definitely, definitely moving to Real Madrid’ type rumour over the last few days, and for the sake of avoiding having to address each individual story as they come in, here’s a general philosophy to apply to this situation.
Nobody in the media has any fresh information on this.
As and when the stream of fiction dries up in the transfer market, the press default to stories involving players from well-supported clubs – Radamel Falcao to Chelsea, James Rodriguez to Manchester United, and Bale to Real Madrid. See how that works. Every couple of weeks, the same old stories are dusted off, changed around a bit, and then reprinted.
You’ll hear tall-tales about Real Madrid’s interest in the Tottenham winger for as long as he stays in North London. Lots of rhetoric: ‘Madrid are preparing a bid’, ‘Madrid have identified Bale as their primary target’, ‘Madrid are to offer Bale hundreds of thousands of pounds a week’. Etcetera etcetera etcetera, until we all die of boredom.
It’s about internet traffic and attention, with very little relevance to the player, Tottenham, or Madrid. The chances are, that if the two clubs ever do agree a fee for Bale, it will just ba announced out of the blue – there’s a working relationship in place between them, and there’ll be very leakage of the story as a result.
