Dampening down the ‘Carlos Vela back to Arsenal’ talk

Carlos Vela has a buy-back clause in his contract with Real Sociedad, and so because he’s had a very good season in La Liga, there’s been plenty of speculation about Arsenal potentially activating said clause.

While the Mexican forward may well have scored 13 times this season, and laid on a further 7 assists for his teammates, he is for all intents and purposes the same player who left The Emirates, albeit a slightly more consistent version. In short, he still probably doesn’t have a natural place in Arsene Wenger’s side.

Some quotes surfaced today from the player himself, and they’ve just been a red flag to the big rumour bull.

“Going back to Arsenal? It could happen at any moment, but I don’t want to think about it.

My life is at Real Sociedad, and it is with that shirt that I want to play in the Champions League next season.”

Here’s the thing: he’s talking in generalities. When he says ‘it could happen at any time’, he means that the clause could theoretically be activated whenever Arsenal want – I don’t think he expects to be back in England any time soon.

It’s probably best to ignore this, and focus on all the ‘war-chest’ chat elsewhere. Fun times ahead for Arsenal fans.
