This column probably won’t stand-up on a weekly basis, but how could we do our end of weekend retrospective without mentioning Sandro’s block in the ninetieth minute of the Southampton/Tottenham game?
Ridiculous, a midfielder cast from iron.
When a fizzing half-volley is struck with this kind of force, 95% of players in the Premier League would do whatever they could to just get out of the way, 4% would turn their back and hope that it hits them, and the final 1% would just stare the ball down and take the shot to the head.
Sandro is part of that special 1%.
The commentator remarked that the Brazilian was knocked out by this. Knock him out? Did it bollocks, Sandro bounced straight to his feet and got on with it. No, he’s not your typical Brazilian footballer – primarily because he plays the game like a Spartan warrior.

He is a brilliant player and a full injury free season will bring him on even further, look out though… a lot of big teams around Europe have their eye on him. Just needs to add a little more composure to his play and he will end up being one of the best holding midfielders in the World, he has everything.
What a tribute to Sandro. He is, so often an unsung hero and I’m so pleased you congratulate him for his robustness. He is often described as ‘the beast’ in affectionist Tottenham blogs. He needs to be the first name on every teamsheet by AVB, he’s that good.
